the box breathing technique
When we feel anxious or panicky, we might notice that our breathing is getting a little faster. This is a normal reaction. Our body is trained for emergency situations, like if there is a lion in the room. Your brain knows that it’s time to run and it sends intense signals to different parts of your body so it can react quickly. Sometimes, things feel like there is a lion in the room, right? You might have gone through a tough situation, a difficult conversation, or thinking of a test that is coming soon. Your heart is pacing, your thoughts are racing, and it’s hard to stay in control.
With this technique, we want to help our mind understands that everything is okay. We can do that by focusing on our breathing and slowing it down. It will send new signals to our body that will invite it to relax.
Here is how it works:
1 breathe in slowly for 4 seconds
2 hold your breath for 4 seconds
3 breathe out slowly for 4 seconds
4 hold for 4 seconds
